Weldon Village Academy, part of Meridian Trust, marked its first anniversary with a celebratory event attended by community members and local dignitaries.
The event highlighted the academy’s achievements since its opening last year and showcased its bright future as a cornerstone of the Weldon community.
Among the guests was the Mayor of Corby, Councillor William Colquhoun, who joined Academy staff, members of the Parish Council, Academy Council members, Meridian Trust colleagues, and students in marking the milestone.
Principal Matt Norris and Executive Principal Sarah Wilson spoke at the event, reflecting on the academy’s journey and its growing impact.
Mr Norris said: “Seeing how far we’ve come in just one year is brilliant. Weldon Village Academy has quickly established itself as a welcoming school for our students, their families and the Weldon community.
“Our students and staff exemplify the values of being curious, caring, and committed, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.”
With Year 7 and Year 8 cohorts now established, the school welcomed 150 new Year 7 students in September 2024, bringing the total student body to 300.
During the most recent open day, more than 1,000 visitors explored the academy, highlighting its popularity within the local community. By September 2025, Weldon Village Academy anticipates an enrolment of more than 475 students.
Executive Principal Sarah Wilson praised the collective efforts of Trust staff, Academy staff, students, and the community in making the academy’s first year a success.
She said: “Weldon Village Academy’s success is down to the dedication and partnership of everyone involved. This milestone is just the beginning, and we’re excited for the opportunities ahead as we continue to grow.”
Students played a key role in the celebration, sharing their experiences and showcasing their creativity through artwork displayed for guests to admire.
The evening concluded with the school’s annual Christmas concert, which brought the festive spirit to life with fantastic group and solo performances from the academy’s students.
The school also serves as a hub for the wider community, hosting events and providing facilities for groups such as Weldon Parish Council, which now holds its meetings on the premises.
Weldon Village Academy is the 13th secondary school in Meridian Trust, a multi-academy trust which includes The Ferrers School, Nene Park Academy, Greater Peterborough UTC and Stamford Welland Academy.
