Over 60 students from eight Meridian Trust secondary schools (Ely College, Greater Peterborough University Technical College, Nene Park Academy, Sharnbrook Academy, Stamford Welland Academy, Swavesey Village College, The Ferrers School and Weldon Village Academy) recently came together to participate in the third annual Worldwise Quiz Competition. The event ran across two heats (EAST Event on 22nd January at Ely College, and WEST Event on 29th January at Weldon Village Academy) and involved Year 9 and Year 10 students answering a range of thought-provoking geography questions. There were eight rounds in total, covering themes including climate change, unequal world, ‘geography from the air’, and fieldwork.
Congratulations to the winning team from Swavesey Village College and the runners-up from The Ferrers School.
This event was designed specifically for students with a passion for geography to further their learning in a competitive way, with the quiz provided by the Geographical Association. It also aimed to emphasise and highlight the real need for geographers of the future.
“In an ever-increasingly complex world, we are going to need more and more young adults who have the competencies that geographers have, in order to tackle some of the biggest issues we face such as climate change, conflict and migration”, explained Mike Smith, Curriculum Director of Geography at Meridian Trust.
Mike Smith added, “It was a pleasure to see so many students enjoy being challenged with the geography questions. There was such a positive buzz amongst everyone at the competition, and I was delighted to see so many students chatting to other students from different schools. I would like to thank all of the Geography departments for their help and support in running such a successful event. Roll on next year!”
