Supporting primary pupils social and emotional wellness

The Crew Approach is used in our schools to support pupil’s social and emotional wellness, and character development.

At West Town Primary Academy, the school have introduced daily learning sessions for pupils based on this approach, pioneered by Ron Berger.

The academy incorporates HOWEL’s – ‘habits of work, ethics of learning’ into all sessions as a daily reminder to pupils on how they should view themselves and others.

Kayla in Year 6 said: “I enjoy that everyone takes part in the Crew sessions and help to support each other, not just to use in school, but with our friends and family too.

“We also use the weather to explain and express our feelings, like today I am feeling sunny.”

Laurynas, also in Year 6, said: “HOWEL’s teaches us how to be kind, always try our best, never give up and if we need help, we can talk to our siblings, parents and teachers”

Principal at West Town Primary Academy, Hannah Quinn, said: “This has been a really valuable and important addition to our school day. At present it’s the older pupils integrating the sessions in to their daily education here and we hope to now expand it across the whole school.

“The approach helps pupils to develop respect for others and well as developing their own confidence and self esteem.”
