In February, Sharnbrook Academy Sixth Form welcomed students and their families from the Academy and across Meridian Trust to their annual Destinations Fortnight.
Students enjoyed over 90 unique events taking place over two weeks with invaluable input from universities, apprenticeship providers and industry professionals showcasing their institutions and jobs and providing information on how to enter their professions.
Destinations Fortnight offered students the choice from a range of different events, presentations, lectures, and panels, aimed primarily at Year 12 students and their parents and sharing the wide breadth of opportunities available after students complete their sixth form studies. There were also a number of events for Year 13 students and parents focused on life after sixth form.
Daniel Baxby, Director of Sixth Form, said: “We’re so proud of our Destinations Fortnight. It offers such a brilliant opportunity for students and their families to engage with a number of exceptional speakers and experts in their field, and we were really pleased to see so many members of our school community embracing this opportunity and joining us for the fortnight’s events. We are hugely grateful to the many individuals and organisations that have given up their time to share their experiences and advice with our students and parents this year and look forward to making the event even bigger and better next year.”
The majority of presentations were delivered remotely, meaning students were able to access them during the school day from any of the academy’s school computers. Students had the chance to opt into any number of the sessions, with the opportunity in every session to ask questions and find out more about the opportunities available. There were also a number of mandatory presentations during the school day, covering more generalised destination choices such as applying for apprenticeships or universities.
The sessions included representatives from the British Medical Association, General Dental Council, The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, The British Psychological Society, Unilever, Grant Thornton, Goldman Sachs, PwC, Allenby Capital, ICAEW, DLS Law, Civil Service, Nissan Engineering, Twiflex, Autotech, Cytiva Kier Construction, RHEL, EVESCO, Tetra Tech, Ørsted, Shrewd Marketing, Environment Agency and 3 Heads Social Media & Creative Agency. Representatives were also present from a number of local colleges and universities, including The Engineering & Design Institute London, Universities of Sheffield, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Bedfordshire and Lincoln, Nottingham Trent University, Anglia Ruskin University, Coventry University, Writtle University College, Cranfield University, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies.
