This year, 8th of May, marked a momentous occasion – the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).
This historic milestone gave our school communities a chance to unite in tribute to the extraordinary people that lived through and helped end the Second World War.
Across our primary schools, pupils and staff came together in moving and memorable ways to honour the day:
Bar Hill Primary School rolled out the red, white, and blue for a street-party style afternoon tea. Welcoming local veterans who generously shared their stories, giving pupils a rare and inspiring glimpse into life during the war.
At Harrold Primary Academy, Year 5 pupils gathered with Cllr. Robert Tickle, Rev. Jacqueline Curtis, and other community members to lay a wreath at the village war memorial. Pupils then read out heartfelt poems in honour of those who served.
Histon and Impington Brook Primary School turned their school field into a celebration space, where pupils listened to Winston Churchill’s iconic VE Day speech, danced, ate scones, and even enjoyed an unexpected flyby from some war planes.
Trumpington Park Primary School took part in a whole school assembly where pupils and staff shared family stories and wartime artefacts, some Year 5 and 6 pupils even performed a Lindy Hop dance. Each year group took part in a themed activity – from learning morse code signals to medal designing.
Somersham Primary School marked the day with a special assembly where pupils explored the meaning and importance of VE Day. Together, they also listened to ‘I’ll Remember Them’, a song written especially for this year’s 80th anniversary.
At The Bluecoat School, pupils immersed themselves in a range of commemorative activities, including a whole school assembly and the creation of collaborative art installation. Pupils also welcomed a special guest, Jean, a local community member who shared own experience of VE Day.
Oakley Primary Academy invited families to join in the celebrations with a special VE Day picnic, complete with games and cake.
It was a day of remembrance, gratitude, and connection, as pupils reflected on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience shown across the UK and Commonwealth.
