Primary schools across Meridian Trust take part in dedicated Environment Day to champion sustainability

Primary schools across Meridian Trust have taken part in a dedicated Environment Day on 9th October, with pupils participating from their own individual school settings while connecting virtually for a tailored schedule of activities.

Organised by the Trust’s curriculum leaders, the day featured a blend of hands-on science, outdoor exploration, and creative projects. Pupils took part in virtual science practicals, which included exploring the fascinating behaviour of termites and learning about delicate marine ecosystems through live online sessions led by science experts from the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT).

Pupils also rolled up their sleeves to conduct site audits around their own school grounds, assessing local biodiversity, waste, and energy use. The practical investigations were paired with interactive climate change games designed by education specialists NUSTEM, alongside creative afternoon art projects that allowed pupils to express their hopes for a sustainable future.

Reflecting on the importance of raising awareness, a pupil from Histon & Impington Brook Primary School said: “The climate stripes are of great importance because it can be shown in and on anything. It must be shown to everybody because all of us can make an impact together.”

Looking forward to putting their learning into action, a pupil from Bar Hill Primary School added: “It has been really good to chat because we need to understand how politicians do stuff to help climate change. I’m also excited because we have permission from our Headteacher to paint our Climate stripes around the school!”

Reflecting on the success of the initiative, Rosie Burns, Primary Science Lead at Meridian Trust, said: “The enthusiasm from the children today has been simply wonderful. Whether they were exploring science practicals or auditing their own school grounds, they threw themselves into every activity. I want to say a huge thank you to all staff, Meridian Trust colleagues, and external partners who worked so hard behind the scenes to make this collaborative day such a resounding success for our pupils.”

Following a similar successful event held for secondary students earlier in the year, this latest day of action means young people of all ages across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire are now playing their part in championing a greener future.
