Meridian Trust celebrates The Cambridge Partnership’s ‘Strong’ Ofsted rating

The Cambridge Partnership is celebrating national recognition after being rated ‘Strong’ in all areas by Ofsted, becoming one of the first teacher training providers in the country to achieve this new benchmark of excellence under the updated inspection framework. Following a detailed inspection in February, The Cambridge Partnership was found to be working above the standard expected across both its primary and secondary programmes.

Inspectors judged the provision to be ‘Strong’ in all ten judgement areas for both our primary and secondary routes (‘Achievement’, ‘Curriculum, teaching and training’, ‘Inclusion’, ‘Leadership’ and ‘Professional behaviours, personal development and wellbeing’).

Centred at Meridian Trust’s Swavesey Village College, The Cambridge Partnership works with 145 schools across 11 local authorities, including Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Norfolk, and has included Teach East’s primary and secondary programmes since September 2024.

The programme currently trains 134 aspiring teachers who go on to work in schools across Cambridgeshire and neighbouring regions, including the East of England and East Midlands.

The Ofsted report highlighted a series of notable strengths across The Cambridge Partnership’s training provision.

It praised strong trainee outcomes, noting that “Trainees achieve very well. They successfully complete their training and secure future teaching positions… This helps trainees to be successful in the next stage of their employment.”

Inspectors recognised high-quality teaching and curriculum design, saying that “Leaders have designed an ambitious curriculum that is informed by high-quality research and statutory guidance. The structure of the curriculum is clear and purposeful.”

They also commended trainees’ excellent subject and pedagogical knowledge, observing that “Trainees quickly develop a deep and thorough understanding of how pupils learn. They skilfully apply both subject and pedagogical knowledge in the classroom and build skills they need to maintain calm and purposeful learning environments.”

The report identified strength in SEND and adaptive teaching, describing how “Expert and insightful training about supporting pupils with SEND helps trainees to understand concepts… The development of trainees’ knowledge and understanding of adaptive practices for pupils who may have barriers to their learning is a strength of the provision.”

Inspectors also noted strong mentoring and feedback systems, stating that “Trainees receive precise targets and helpful feedback that help them to rapidly improve their teaching. Programme managers ensure that trainees benefit from tailored observation feedback and high-quality mentoring support.”

Further highlights included a supportive and inclusive culture, where “The unwavering focus on building trusting relationships means trainees feel comfortable to share when something is difficult… Leaders and staff respond with care and precision, shaping adjustments around each trainee’s individual needs so that trainees can participate and thrive.”

Ofsted also praised strong leadership and partnership working, concluding that “Leaders implement and enact a clear vision that every pupil deserves the best teachers. This vision is evident in the design and delivery of high-quality training and close partnerships with local schools, multi-academy trusts and other initial teacher education providers.”

Finally, the report celebrated a positive trainee experience, recognising that “Trainees are very well prepared for the realities of teaching… They quickly grasp what the job truly demands… becoming thoughtful, reflective practitioners.”

Richard Davies, Director of The Cambridge Partnership, said: “We are immensely proud to have achieved a ‘Strong’ rating across every area. It’s fantastic recognition for the dedication of our team and partner schools, whose commitment ensures every trainee is well prepared to make a real difference in the classroom.”

Mark Woods, CEO of Meridian Trust, added: “This outcome highlights the impact The Cambridge Partnership continues to have across our region. Achieving a ‘Strong’ judgement under Ofsted’s new framework reflects not only exceptional quality but also a culture of continuous improvement and a genuine pursuit of excellence. It’s a testament to the meticulous, individualised support it provides to trainees and the vital role it plays in developing the next generation of inspirational teachers.”
