Year 9 and 10 geographers from across Meridian Trust came together to participate in the inaugural Worldwise Quiz Competition. A total of 68 students from nine Meridian secondary schools (SVA, GPUTC, NPA, SWA, TFS, SVC, ELY, NCA, NSC) competed in two heats, tackling a series of thought-provoking Geography questions.
The competition featured eight rounds, covering themes such as sustainability, ‘Geography from the air,’ and fieldwork. Ely College emerged victorious, with The Ferrers School finishing as runners-up.
The event aimed to foster a love for learning in students who are passionate about Geography, within a competitive yet collaborative environment. It also underscored the growing demand for future geographers. As our world becomes increasingly complex, we need more young adults with geographical skills to address major issues like climate change, conflict, and migration.
Luke, a student from Ely College, expressed his enthusiasm, saying: “I had a really great time at the quiz. I enjoyed meeting other geographers from other colleges and testing my geography knowledge! The questions were tough, but I’m pleased that the ‘Simply Gorge-ous team’ won through in the end!”
The quiz, organised by the Geographical Association, was overseen by Curriculum Director of Geography, Mike Smith. He commented: “It was a pleasure to see so many students enjoy being challenged with the Geography questions. There was such a positive ‘buzz’ amongst everyone at the competition, and I was delighted to see so many students chatting with peers from different schools. I would like to thank all of the Geography Departments for their help and support in running such a successful event; roll on next year!”
