Armistice Day was beautifully observed across the Meridian Trust last week. Here are just a few examples from our Primary Schools, who kindly shared their activities with us.
The Bluecoat School Remembrance Assembly and War Memorial visit
On Thursday 10th November, The Bluecoat School invited parents to attend a special Remembrance assembly, prepared by the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. A poem, inspired by their learning about World War 1 and written by all of the Year 6 pupils was read out (line by line) and a wreath was laid in the centre of the hall. Pupils sat in a cross formation and Headteacher Emma Houlton spoke about the sacrifices made and the importance of Remembrance.

On Friday 11th November, several pupils went to the War Memorial in Stamford where local schools and civic dignitaries gathered in prayer and remembrance. A two-minute silence to mark Armistice Day was observed and The Bluecoat School pupils laid their wreath at the memorial, studying the bronze plaques and reflecting on the significance of the day.
Downham Feoffees Primary Academy Service of Remembrance
The whole community at Downham Feoffees Primary Academy came together to pay their respects on Armistice Day. Pupils gathered to remember those who fought for our country, particularly poignant for the Year 5 and Year 6 classes, as they had studied World War II for their topic last half term.
At 11am, all children assembled on the playground to take part in a two-minute silence. Mark Hollington, Chair of Downham Feoffees Academy Council and the Chair of FODA (Friends of Downham Feoffees Primary Academy) were in attendance. DFPA Heads of Pupil Voice did a wonderful job of reading the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae.
In preparation for Remembrance Day, the children in Reception visited St. Leonard’s Church, laying some beautiful handmade poppy wreaths as a mark of respect. The children in Year 5 and Year 6 spent the week creating poems about World War II, using literary techniques to convey the emotion and significance of the time.
Remembrance Day was also an opportunity for Rainbow, Brownies, Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to wear their Guiding and Scouting uniforms to school. As an academy, DFPA felt a sense of togetherness as they learned about why the phrase, “We will remember them” is so important.
Hatton Park Primary School window display
Pupils at Hatton Park Primary spent time learning about WW1 and used their creative skills to make a beautiful window display.
Harrold Primary Academy Remembrance Service
On Friday 11th November, staff and pupils at the school held a moving Remembrance service led by the church Reverend at the cenotaph on the village green. The whole school was in attendance along with members of the village community. A wreath was laid and pupils paused to think about the significance of the day.
