Lantern Community Primary School has revamped its Owls and Kingfishers classrooms, which are home to reception-age children.
The classrooms have been turned into a “bright, open-plan space,” combining the two separate rooms into one large area, with new cloakroom and toilet facilities. The renovations took place over the summer holidays and were funded by the school and Meridian Trust.
Friends of the Lantern School charity (FOTLS) also contributed £5,000 towards new equipment, including a mud kitchen, covered sandpits, role play stations, a den building area, and new literacy and art resources. The upgrade was completed in time for children to start the new school year in September.
Chris Axten-Higgs, headteacher of Lantern Community Primary School, said: “We are incredibly proud of what’s been achieved. This project has transformed our Early Years environment into a space that truly reflects the joy and curiosity of our youngest learners.”
Assistant headteacher Thomas Ritson said: “The continuous provision between both classrooms means the children have more opportunities for developing friendships, social interactions and has doubled the learning opportunities that we can offer. It’s a more inspiring place to learn. The children love it. They are so keen to explore. They’re always talking about it.”
Reception teacher Susie Jones, who has taught at the school for 14 years, said: “We are thrilled to have lots of new things for the children. It’s really helped with their exploring and learning time.”
Her colleague, Kate Suswain, said the changes have significantly improved their ability to support the pupils by providing more activities and opportunities.
Meredith Hux Atkins, chair of Friends of the Lantern School, said: “We are so happy to be able to contribute to this incredible transformation for our reception children, helping to give them the best possible start in their education journey.”
