Great British Bake Off finalist Andrew Smyth led an evening of ‘Bakineering’ to the delight of an audience at Histon & Impington Brook Primary School.
Andrew, an aerospace engineer, baker, and presenter, gained a firm following for his Northern Irish charm and outrageously engineered creations, including a gingerbread bridge, during his time as a finalist on the Great British Bake Off.
Since then, he has pioneered the art of ‘Bakineering,’ captivating audiences with live shows and even starring in the original Netflix series, Baking Impossible.
During his show, the pupils learned about the fascinating connections between molten sugar and micro-meteorite protection. They discovered that meringue is an excellent insulator and also had the opportunity to enjoy some delicious tasters.
Rosie Burns, Science Teacher at the school, said: “It was a brilliant evening. The mouth-watering smells from the front of the hall made it really tricky not to devour our meringue samples straight away.”
“After the fantastic show, pupils had the chance to try a range of science activities linked to Outer Space, including rocket launching, playdough planets, and moon crater experiments. Each activity provided an immersive experience, allowing us to grasp scientific concepts in a way that was both entertaining and educational. The experiments truly were ‘out of this world.’”
Finally, the group headed outdoors to gaze into the night sky. Rosie added: “We would like to express a huge thank you to all the parents and carers who lent us their telescopes for this event. The cool, clear night was perfect for seeing the moon and even Jupiter!”
