Students and staff across our schools enjoyed a fabulous week of celebrations leading up to the King’s Coronation on 6th May 2023.
Here’s our round-up of just some of the Meridian Trust festivities…
At West Town Primary, the children started their Friday with a whole school assembly about the Royal family and the children came together to sing the National Anthem. They have been practicing this over the last few weeks and it sounded great. The hall was filled with lots of red, white and blue and Mr Brown, their caretaker, decorated the playground with bunting with hopes the sun would stay out.
During the day, the children spent time together getting creative and making their crowns ready to wear in the afternoon. Staff spent a lot of time organising all of the treats brought in by families for the street parties.. The school kitchen team decorated the lunch hatch with Union Jack flags, balloons and even had crown shaped biscuits for pudding. Throughout the week, each class had made their own bunting which adorned the main hall, so the children could see their work. The children came to the hall in year groups and enjoyed a feast fit for a King! – lots of fruit, popcorn, crisps and biscuits.
Staff and pupils at Bar Hill Primary School celebrated with a special picnic lunch. The British weather meant that it was an indoor picnic, but the children really enjoyed it, especially the coronation cake made by their catering team!
Staff and Pupils at Martin Bacon Academy proudly wore red, white and blue.
The Early Years children at Histon and Impington Park Primary school created commemorative stamps for the Kings Coronation, using a silhouette of King Charles to make their own versions.
Downham Feoffees Primary Academy celebrated by wearing red, white and blue. At lunchtime, they enjoyed a Coronation Picnic in the school hall – the rain didn’t dampen the children’s spirits! It was a joyous event — a special memory of this point in history for all to remember. Classes enjoyed completing work themed around the Coronation. Year 1 wrote their own poems based on A.A. Milne’s ‘If I Were King’. The older year groups discussed the importance of traditional ceremonies in our culture and wrote some hopes for the new era of King Charles III.
At Somersham Primary, the children enjoyed a coronation-themed art event in their House groups. Children from Reception to Year 6 gathered together to make crowns which they then wore to assembly. There was some great teamwork and communication on show, as well as learning about this historic event.
Stamford Welland Academy held a Coronation tea party for many of their local community groups. Students prepared food, played music and created the bunting for the event. A huge well done to Mrs Boyd and her team of staff and student helpers, for creating such a wonderful afternoon tea! Mrs Thackwray and Amber, Brooke and Holly organised and performed live music and a wonderful team of school cadets served the guests. The school also held a competition to make “A cake fit for a King”… Congratulations to Gracie & Laura, who worked together to create a fantastic crown cake (pictured below).
At The Bluecoat Primary School, staff and pupils celebrated the coronation by learning about King Charles’ passions for wildlife and farming. With this in mind every child in school was able to dig over and plant fruits or vegetables in their Coronation Community Allotment. It was a whole community effort, with Stamford Welland Academy cadets coming over to help prepare the ground for the children the evening before, and with parent and Academy Counsellor volunteers too. Everyone shared a picnic on the school field followed by sports and games.
The day was underpinned by the launch of the new School Values of Responsibility, Independence and Resilience – How King Charles III has shown these through his support of farming and protecting the countryside, how the school will apply them to their everyday lives and how they will need to apply them to maintaining their class areas in the Coronation Allotment.
At Oakley Primary Academy, pupils and staff celebrated the Kings Coronation by inviting their families to a picnic on the field. It was an amazing turnout and everyone enjoyed eating and playing summer games. There was even a visit from the local ice cream van!
