Rosie, could you tell us about your career path leading to your current roles?
I graduated from Durham University with a BSc in Natural Sciences in 2015, then completed my General Primary PGCE at the University of Cambridge in 2016. After teaching in a Cambridgeshire primary school for two years, I completed my Master of Education (MEd) at Cambridge in 2019. I joined Histon and Impington Junior School (now Histon and Impington Brook Primary School) in September 2018 as a Year 4 Class Teacher. I taught in KS2 for 6 years, including two as an Upper KS2 Lead and SLT member, before moving to my current Year 2 class.
I quickly took on the role of KS2 Primary Science Lead, extending my work across phases and collaborating with science leads in other Meridian Trust schools. As my experience grew, I became Primary Science Lead for Science Learning East (SLE) and a Science Tutor for the University of Cambridge’s Primary PGCE course.
My professional development has been significant: I completed STEM Lead Facilitator training, presented at the STEM Primary Science Annual Conference in 2023, and was awarded a Primary Science Teacher Award from the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT). In November 2022, I obtained my National Professional Qualification in Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD), enabling me to provide CPD and mentorship across Cambridgeshire and for PGCE trainees.
What exciting science projects have you led across Meridian Trust’s primary schools?
Following the 2021 Ofsted review, I led the development of an improved KS2 science curriculum, embedding disciplinary knowledge within substantive knowledge units and ensuring full coverage of all enquiry types. I produced a robust KS2 Meridian Primary Science Curriculum with a fully inclusive educational philosophy at its core.
I also implemented an End of Key Stage 2 Moderation in Science process. This has been crucial in supporting teachers to make accurate and robust judgements, improving confidence in our regional KS2 science assessments.
How are Meridian Trust schools collaborating to strengthen their science curriculum?
Our Meridian Primary Science Team collaborates on curriculum design, CPD training, and projects like the Ogden Trust Partnership. We recently worked with a Primary Science Consultant to improve our KS1 Science offer, resulting in a more consistent and high-quality provision across our schools. Staff from Meridian primary schools also have opportunities to attend CPD sessions, such as one on Space, that support physics education and engagement for our children.
How does your teaching experience enhance your science leadership across the Trust?
My ongoing classroom experience allows me to create effective learning environments and assess what works in practice. This informs my leadership, ensuring our curriculum remains relevant and practical in diverse classroom settings. I can address obstacles to good subject teaching practices and review and refine my leadership input to ensure it remains relevant in changing educational contexts.
Which aspects of Meridian Trust’s culture align most closely with your own educational philosophy?
I strongly believe in the Trust’s vision of high-quality education for all and extending the boundaries of learning. In my classroom, everyone’s voice is heard and valued. I strive to provide varied science enrichment activities, including competitions, scientist visits, collaborations with outside agencies, science exhibitions, and an annual School Science Week. These activities enhance our curriculum, promote scientific dialogue, and increase science capital.
How does your role with Science Learning East (SLE) complement your work within Meridian Trust?
My SLE role provides networking opportunities and access to innovative ideas from various contexts. It allows me to engage with recent research and implement it into the Meridian curriculum. For example, I recently facilitated funded visits to Cambridge Science Centre or specialised Future Fens Workshops to learn about science contexts meaningful to our local areas.
What are your interests outside of work?
I’m passionate about water sports, particularly sea-based activities like surfing, paddle-boarding and kayaking. I also enjoy skiing, tennis, and swimming. Music is another passion, and I perform with the Southern Spirit Singers, a London-based chamber choir, participating in concerts and international competitions.
