Jenny Morton

HR Officer

During National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a light on some of the 40+ apprentices who make up an essential part of our Meridian Trust workforce. Among them is Jenny Morton, currently pursuing her Level 3 HR Support Apprenticeship. We had the opportunity to catch up with Jenny and learn more about her journey.

Jenny, tell us about your apprenticeship.
I’m studying the Level 3 HR Support Apprenticeship with Foundation CIPD. The apprenticeship is a 16-month course which is delivered through webinars. There are a series of modules, which cover the knowledge outlined by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the practical skills and behaviours (apprenticeship), that culminate in written assessments. These assessments are marked (based on comprehension and application) and a final project is decided upon. The final project is a larger piece of work which is rigorously assessed and followed by a discussion based on our understanding and results of the project.

What has been the biggest challenge?
One of the hardest aspects has been switching off from my work commitments to focus on my personal learning. It has required discipline and careful time management.

How has the Trust supported your apprenticeship?
Meridian Trust has been incredibly supportive throughout my apprenticeship. I have been assigned a mentor who offers me guidance and advice. Additionally, the Trust has allocated time for me to have study days. They have also facilitated the onboarding process and attended joint calls and discussions. Importantly, the Trust covers the costs associated with the apprenticeship, which shows how much they are invested in my growth and development.

What have been the main benefits to you?
The main benefits come from the knowledge I gain and the confidence this gives me, both in my current job and for future opportunities. I’m enjoying knowing that I am gaining a recognised qualification while being exposed to areas of HR that I may not have naturally explored. Also, I’m gaining valuable insights and experiences that are helping my understanding of HR practices.

Any advice for others?
Genuinely, I would say to people “Just do it”! If it interests you and will benefit your career, don’t hesitate! Embrace the chance to enhance your skills and knowledge, regardless of your age. I’m 40 years old and never thought I’d be able to better myself in this way. It feels great to know that I’m making myself proud.
