Daniel, a Year 7 student at Weldon Village Academy, is passionate about the environment. As a key member of the school’s Eco Council, he’s already getting stuck into projects that are helping his school become a greener place to learn. Daniel’s work is part of a much bigger effort across Meridian Trust to tackle climate change, where students, staff, and leaders are all pulling together to build a more sustainable future.
We recently asked him some questions for our My Studies series, which showcases students from across Meridian Trust:
What kinds of things do you do as an Eco Councillor at Weldon Village Academy?
“We have done bird counts in the school grounds, researched renewable energy and climate change, and we are starting to think of ideas for improving our own school site. I have also improved my IT skills using PowerPoint, as well as looking at GIS.”
What made you want to join the Eco Council and help the school care for the environment?
“I wanted to be a member of the Eco Council to help and learn more about the environment. I enjoy sharing my ideas and want our school to be the best it can be, so being a part of the Eco Council will help towards this.”
Is there a project or activity you’ve really enjoyed being part of so far?
“I have really enjoyed making PowerPoints for the Eco Council and helping with litter picking, therefore helping the environment. By completing these activities, I have been able to obtain PLEDGES awards.”
How do you feel about joining the Meridian Trust Climate Action Committee and meeting students from other schools who care about the planet too?
“Really excited because this is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience to make a difference. It will be nice to share ideas with other students.”
What changes would you love to see at your school to make it even more eco-friendly?
“Maybe bring in more bins so that people don’t litter as often, and make people look after the environment more. We can definitely organise more litter picks.”
What changes would you love to see in the wider world to help the planet?
“More energy from renewable sources so the climate won’t be as dangerous, and there will be less pollution around the world. I would also like the oceans to be cleaned up.”
What are your hopes for the future?
“My hopes for the future are that I hope we will gradually reduce pollution of all kinds. This would help to make the world a better place.”
What kind of job would you like to do when you’re older?
“Honestly, I want to be an artist because I love art in general – it’s fun and fascinating. I would like to do artwork of wildlife.”
Daniel’s enthusiasm is a great example of how Meridian Trust’s Climate Action work is empowering young people to share ideas, develop practical skills and take meaningful action for the environment.
