Adrian, can you tell us about your career background and what led you to become an Academy Councillor at WVA?
I have been in the teaching profession for 35 years now, working in primary and middle school education both in the U.K. and internationally. I started my teaching career as a maths teacher and ended up as a headteacher before becoming an Academy Councillor at Weldon Village Academy. I moved to Weldon as WVA was being built and saw an advertisement for local councillors, and this opportunity has allowed me to establish myself within the local community.
What are the main responsibilities of an Academy Councillor?
My main responsibilities as an Academy Councillor are to support WVA as best I can in its mission and education. I am Vice Chair of the Council and the Safeguarding Champion. As part of my role, I attend council meetings throughout the year, visit the school to check on safeguarding and attend events, for example, concerts.
What initiatives at WVA are you currently involved in?
As a retired professional I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to contribute at every level to support Weldon Village Academy. I run an after-school club which helps students prepare for the U.K. maths challenge. I am also hoping to get involved in other activities the school offers, for example, sports or helping with school trips.
How do you engage with the local Weldon community?
I attend events at the school, help with open evenings and promote the academy through the church and cricket club.
What is the highlight of being an Academy Councillor?
Volunteering as an Academy Councillor is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a growing school within an expanding community. I love having the chance to share my experiences with the team and engage with the pupils, parents and staff. It is an exciting time to play a part in a new school.
What is it like to be part of Meridian Trust?
Being part of Meridian Trust is like being part of a family that shares excellent practice and support throughout its membership.
What qualities should someone have if they’re thinking about becoming an Academy Councillor?
I wholeheartedly recommend this role to anyone who is passionate about education and community development. Ultimately, it’s about offering your time to young people within your community. The Academy Councils welcome members from diverse backgrounds and I would urge you to talk to the school office if you are interested, or email: Governance@MeridianTrust.co.uk.
