West Town Primary Academy

Trust involvement 2014 following a measures inspection. First inspection as a CMAT academy 2017 graded good.

With 95% English as an additional language, a high mobility of children and results significantly below national, West Town had been facing some large challenges. Embarking on a process of building staff confidence and expertise, whilst addressing the unique challenges of having upwards of 39 languages in the school, developing our day to day teaching techniques was the key to reaching the goals for our children. Expectations were raised and the belief that all children could succeed began to become a reality as staff worked hard to embed new approaches and teaching techniques, which promoted good learning not only for our children with a large variety of starting points but also for all learners. A bespoke set of pedagogies have been worked on and refined over the past 7 years which have led to consistently improved outcomes not only in the school’s SATs results but also in the development of the children’s character and broader experience at the school. Specialist teachers in Art Music Drama and PE were employed at the outset to ensure that children had a rounded experience and could enjoy a sense of success regardless of their academic or language ability enabling them to become more resilient and confident all round. The school also moved into a bespoke new building on a new site in 2017 and continues to grow in size and popularity as a strong and capable team move it on to the next stage of its development, quietly getting on with further developments and research to enhance the learning and experience of its children and staff.
