We have developed clearly structured progressive reading lessons based on a series of skills needed to successfully decode texts. Skills are explicitly taught and practiced. Key features of these lessons include high quality teacher modelling, frequent discussion between children using sentence stems to help them to structure and explain the reasons for their understanding of the text and challenge each others views and vocabulary enhancement. Texts are chosen to fit with our science or topic themes so that learning is linked across the curriculum and reading lessons feed directly into a range of subjects and variety of work. The impact of these lessons can not only be seen in improved results but in the increased ability of the children to talk about and understand the texts they read and form views around them. They are able to link the reading skills they learn and talk about to their own writing.
