Bluecoat Primary School has taken an innovative approach to energising its pupils and teachers this term.
What started as a flash mob dance on the first Friday after Christmas by the teachers, quickly turned into a weekly ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ dance routine every Thursday.
The initial flash mob had the intention of blowing away the January blues. However, it received an overwhelmingly positive response from both teachers and students alike, becoming a weekly event at the school.
The weekly ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ routine is no longer about the teachers performing for the pupils. It has evolved into a community-building activity, where both teachers and children come together every Thursday to perform the routine.
Led by Year 1 Teacher and PE lead, Antonia Pinto, along with Chris Weaton from Inspire+, the sessions are filled with upbeat and popular songs which energise the entire school community.
Antonia Pinto said: “The goal is to set a positive tone for the day, promote well-being, and strengthen our sense of community.”
“It’s amazing to see the children and teachers dancing together, and now we have had parents express an interest in joining in!”
The weekly practice sessions occur every Thursday lunchtime, creating a dedicated time for pupils and teachers to come together.
Emma Houlton, Headteacher at Bluecoat Primary School, added: “These new and exciting sessions allow us to create a positive and vibrant learning environment for everyone at the school. The sessions help support personal development for both pupils and staff and create a strong community within the school.”
