The Bluecoat Primary School in Stamford is celebrating being awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) in recognition of its commitment to excellence in science teaching.
The School, which is part of Meridian Trust, was praised for its high expectations of its teachers and pupils and was commended for its ongoing commitment to science leadership, teaching and learning.
In her report, the PSQM Reviewer noted that the school “has a clear vision for science, which is now being recognised by both staff and children. Evidence from both staff and pupil voice shows how the principles have impacted on teaching & learning, with children being supported to develop the skills and knowledge to answer their own questions.”
Emma Houlton, Headteacher for The Bluecoat Primary School said “I am thrilled that we have been recognised for our high-quality science curriculum. Our pupils are really enthusiastic about science and it’s wonderful to see them enjoy their learning and showing confidence in lessons. I’d also like to thank our parents, who have played an important part in supporting our ‘Science at home’ activities.”
Evidence from the report shows that children at the school are beginning to widen their understanding of science and the importance of it in everyday life. There are future plans for whole-school science trips, including a trip to the planetarium, which is certain to inspire the children.
Emma continued: “A huge thank you to our science Leader, Laura Bell, who is responsible for our science teaching and learning, from Nursery to Y6. I’m very proud of her and her team, as well as our wonderful children for embracing science and showing a thirst for learning.”
The PSQM reviewer praised Laura’s commitment to developing the science teaching at Bluecoat, saying: “You have worked well with all staff across the school to ensure that opportunities for all are consistent, no matter the teacher or age, and have quickly identified areas where more support is needed.
“You should be very proud of the impact you have had on your school community, a fantastic job!”
Laura said: “It’s a very proud day for me and everyone in our school community. I’m really grateful to my colleagues and also, to the children, for their continued enthusiasm and passion for the subject that I love.”
The report observed that Laura had “used pupil and staff voice to drive purchase of additional resources, such as new practical equipment (magnets & electricity) and a variety of high-quality texts. Links have been established with the local secondary school to improve sharing of equipment, as seen in the portfolio, with children experiencing quality microscope use.”
PSQM is a comprehensive evidence-based professional development programme that effectively develops science leadership, ensuring that teachers have the knowledge, capability and support they need to transform science education and shape future generations.
