Bar Hill schoolchildren collect 280 pairs of pyjamas for hospital patients

Children at a primary school near Cambridge have collected hundreds of pairs of new pyjamas to help bring comfort to children spending Christmas in hospital. Pupils at Bar Hill Primary School, a village school on the edge of Cambridge and part of Meridian Trust, rallied behind the charity Children’s Hospital Pyjamas after School Council member Miss Frampton brought the idea forward, with strong support from colleague Miss Longstaff.

Families from across the school community, including Buttercups Childcare and local childminders Kirsten and Jacky, donated an impressive 280 pairs of pyjamas, which will be passed on to children in local hospitals over the festive period.

Headteacher Charlotte Linden said the response had captured the true spirit of the school. She said: “Our School Council have shown real leadership in championing this cause, and the generosity of our families has been overwhelming. Everyone has pulled together to make a difficult time a little kinder for children spending Christmas in hospital.”

The charity’s founder, Charmaine Green, speaking on behalf of Children’s Hospital Pyjamas, said: “We are blown away by your support and the incredible amount of pyjamas your school community have donated, and the amount of money you have raised. Every pair you’ve donated gives a poorly child in hospital a reason to smile; it brings them comfort and carries the message ‘we care’. As a small charity that relies on the kindness and generosity of others, thank you for making what we do possible – thank you for making a difference.”

Lesley Birch, Deputy CEO of Meridian Trust, praised the school’s efforts. She said: “Bar Hill Primary School has a strong track record of working closely with its community, and this project is a wonderful example of that. The kindness shown by pupils, staff and families reflects the values we hold across Meridian Trust – supporting others, working together and helping every child feel valued.”
